Aboriginal Heritage
The Kaurna (pronounced Gar-na) people are the traditional owners and custodians of the Adelaide Plains. Adelaide is the ideal place for you to be introduced to the rich culture and history of the Kaurna people and the Australian Aboriginal.
The Aboriginal Cultures Gallery at the South Australian Museum houses the world's largest collection of Aboriginal antiquities.
Adelaide is also home to Tandanya, the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. This makes the city the national gateway to Aboriginal culture.At the Adelaide Botanic Garden, learn about traditional Aboriginal foods and culture on the Tappa Mai tour. The trail demonstrates the ingenuity of Aboriginal people who use native plants for sustenance, shelter, ceremonial, medicinal and other practical purposes.
European Heritage
It's easy to discover South Australia's European heritage - much of it is on display on North Terrace. This wide boulevard is lined with plaques commemorating the men and women who have played a significant part in our history. You'll also find war memorials, historic churches and statues.
The South Australian Museum is on North Terrace, as well as the State Library. Just around the corner on Kintore Road, you'lll find the Migration Museum - the only museum in the country that tells the story, often with deep feeling, of the thousands of people who c
ame to Australia as migrants and refugees. It explains their origins and reasons for plunging so bravely into the unknown.The Adelaide Town Hall, in King William Street, is full of the city's heritage, including a room in honour of the queen after whom Adelaide was named. And Port Adelaide is the old maritime heart of South Australia and our first declared heritage area. It features some of the finest historic buildings in South Australia.
